Phasing Growth Stages
When choosing to develop your own digital signage network you will need to approach the overall project in bite-sized phases so that you grow logically and sequentially. You can’t put the cart before the horse! Proper phasing allows for you to also come up on the learning curve as you work out various challenges and obstacles that will invariably pop-up from time to time. It will also permit you to isolate your challenges so you can focus on them with resolve, as opposed to trying to find a needle in a haystack. As in any building project you need to begin with a solid foundation and then add additional blocks and mortar as you begin to sense you have mastered the previous phase of construction. Uncontrolled growth can quickly become a problem, so maintaining a proper rate of growth is essential to a streamlined and consistent pattern of sustainable growth. Each of our phases begin with the basic concept or idea for that phase, and then we begin the research portion of the phase to determine what we will need to accomplish the phase and what it will cost. Once those things are determined we decide if it can be purchased from our operating budget or if we need to go to our administrators for central funding. Our cost analysis is always accurate (we build no fat into our projected costs) and we are sensitive not to “nickel and dime” our administrators needlessly… and they appreciate and respect us for that. We also try to time our phases or projects according to our fiscal year budgetary process so that we provide plenty of advanced lead time for funding to occur. We have found this to be a winning strategy for everyone involved.

Infancy (Conceptual Ideas, Budget, Software, R&D, Identify Vendors, Purchase & Drop Shipping)
Toddler (Power, Network, Mounting Monitors, Installation of Components On- Site)
Adolescent (Backing-Up, Lighting-Up, Beta Test, Crash & Burn, Deployment in Isolation)
Teenager (Up and Running, Testing, Emergency Alert Features, Fail-Over System)
Adult (Forward Vision, New Technology, Directed Audio, Wayfinding, Video Walls, Updating Older Technology, Biometric Audience Measurement, Continuing Education)
Periods of time to achieve stages of phasing growth will need to be assessed on an individual basis. No two organizations grow at the same rate. As well, budgetary considerations must be factored into the mix of decisions for sustained support of the network and future growth. We spent most of the first year of development going through the segments of Infancy/Toddler/Adolescent/Teenager growth stages. Years Two to the Present find us focusing on the Adult Stage of growth as a team. As anyone with children of their own will understand, there was a true desire (bordering on lust) to want to grow into areas we really weren’t ready to grow into in those first two years… we had to be patient and not risk losing sight of what we needed to do to maintain our success over the long haul. We kept fat files of “things” we wanted to do in the future and now we are at the point that we are investigating all those fun ideas for the phases in front of us. Be patient.
